Summative Assessment One (Worth 25% of final grade) Purpose This assessment will enable the student to meet Nga Huanga/Learning Outcomes One to Five. The student will demonstrate an understanding of the implications of a specific health experience for nursing practice, analyse issues around health education for adults and demonstrate knowledge of the principles of preventative measures and therapeutic interventions in acute and complex care. The student will relate the principles of cultural safety to health education for an ‘at risk’ group, and demonstrate how health informatics, research and theory might influence practice. Assessment task Smoking tobacco has been identified as a major public health concern in New Zealand (Ministry of Health [MOH], 2014). “Smoking kills more people in NZ each year than road crashes, alcohol, other drugs, AIDS, suicide, murder, drowning and earthquakes – all put together” (MOH, 2017, para. 1). According to the MOH (2014) a number of priority populations have been identified as requiring stop-smoking support. This is because the groups have high rates of smoking, they may have socioeconomic deprivation and/or barriers to accessing services, or because they will receive significant benefits from smoking cessation. These groups include Maori, Pacific and Asian peoples, pregnant and breastfeeding women, children and young people, people that are hospitalised and those that use mental health services or addiction treatment services (MOH, 2014). The MOH (2014) writes … interventions that are effective in the general population are also effective in these population groups. However, when delivering interventions to these groups, health care workers may need to change their approach to make sure the intervention is as acceptable, accessible and appropriate as possible. (p. 22) Read the attached scenarios. Select one scenario to base this assignment on. In an essay: 1. Discuss briefly why the selected population group is identified as a priority by the MOH. Use health informatics to support your answer. 2. Develop a health education plan to meet the smoking cessation needs of the client in the scenario. Clearly demonstrate how the education plan you have developed meets the needs of the at risk population group AND the client. Ensure the health education plan is appropriate for the clinical environment – from admission through to discharge to the community. Word Guide: 1800 (+/- 10%) All work must be supported by a range of relevant and up-to-date literature and research. Literature used to comment on current nursing practice must have been published within the last five years. The references/ literature should be related to new zealand. References Ministry of Health.
